40th Annual Chapter Meeting Celebrates Past Presidents and Honor Award Recipients
Members and guests filled Maggiano's Little Italy in Tyson's Corner on October 20th, including 3 original Charter Members and 19 Past Presidents, to celebrate our 40th Annual Chapter Meeting. President Sean E. Reilly, AIA welcomed everyone and introduced our special guest, Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, Executive Vice President/CEO of AIA Virginia. The evening featured an entertaining review of the first 20 years of the Chapter and elections for our 2016 leaders. The highlight of the event was the presentation of our Chapter Honor Awards. A list of our distinguished award recipients and our newly elected leaders is available here.
Detailed information and pictures from the event will be published in our November/December issue of AIA Northern Virginia News.

Canstruction® Build-Out Night is at Reagan Washington National Airport on November 13
You're invited to watch and encourage our teams as they build structures entirely of canned food, which ultimately goes to the Arlington Food Assistance Center in time to stock their shelves for the holidays. We are building in Terminals B+C, Level 1, Baggage Claim Area, from 5:00p until midnight, and the exhibit is on display at the airport through November 21. [info]

Elk Run Ridge
Carter + Burton Architecture, PLC
Madison County, VA
|
Recently featured as one of only three U.S. house designs in Architecture Now! Vol. 10, Elk Run Ridge is an "instant heirloom" built to feature regional craft and the valued collection of a folk art dealer and a music professor.
Placed on a knoll on 100 acres of farmland, the project fits the site as naturally as nearby agrarian buildings. An elongated configuration with unified roof design features separate master and guest bedroom suites, open plan, dogtrot breezeway and porches. The design connects with the scale of the site while being functional for 2 people or 150 people for large annual reunions.
A regional response to a southern place, the design is anchored by fieldstone gravity walls and chimney while a "core" with walnut basket weave houses plumbing and storage functions. Radiant concrete floors linked to the geothermal system provide a passive and active heat sink. Overhangs protect the interior from summer sun. The zinc roof folds to become a protective shear wall. The wood, stone and concrete are brought together with hidden stainless steel connectors while SIPs and glulams allow for large open spans. A study in material expression, the house showcases built-in Nakashima shelving, vanity and furniture. A built-in grill, screen porch and entry court connect to the land in a minimalist way. FSC certified Duratherm windows, recycled glass tile and ERV units are a few sustainable tactics supplementing the handmade craft giving back to local culture.
