Interschool Design Competition at the National Building Museum
On September 14 teams of local architecture students will gather in the Great Hall of the National Building Museum for a design charrette focusing on celebration through design. Their projects will be reviewed by a jury chaired by Ma Yansong, Founder and Principal of MAD Architects in Beijing. Winning teams will be announced at a reception at the NBM on September 15, followed by a Spotlight on Design lecture given by Ma Yansong. Visitors are welcome to view the charrette in progress on Sunday (9:00a-5:00p) and attend the awards reception on Monday (5:00-6:00p). Paid reservations are required for the Spotlight on Design lecture. Over the past two decades this student competition has been organized by the three Washington area chapters of the American Institute of Architects, the metro area schools of architecture, the Washington Architectural Foundation and the National Building Museum. Breaking the prescriptive mold of horizontally layered homes, Helmsdale Residence aspires to render unclear the spatial organization of the project and explore an architecture of ambiguous scale. The exterior composition reflects a dynamic fluid interior. Uncorrelated to the building's structure, glazing panels are detailed flush to the exterior surface, eliminating shadows which further inhibit a reading of the building's scale.
