|
Imagine the view from the 32nd floor of the tallest office building in metro DC. Now mark your calendars to experience this view on Thursday, June 12.
We will hold our 2014 Design Awards Celebration at 1812 North Moore Street in the heart of Rosslyn. Designed by Davis Carter Scott, Ltd. and owned, developed and managed by Monday Properties, this 35-story, LEED® certified, glass office building offers 360-degree views of the skyline.
Watch the sunset as you sip wine, catch up with friends and celebrate the great design work of our Chapter members. Look for additional information on the building and the celebration in the May/June Newsletter. Reservations will open soon.

New Legislation: National Design Services Act |
The AIA and the AIAS announce the introduction of the National Design Services Act (NDSA), which will give architecture students the same relief from crushing student loan debt, which is already granted young lawyers, doctors and others in return for community service. The bipartisan legislation, H.R. 4205, was recently introduced. Please contact your congressman today to support the timely passage of this important legislation. [more info]

North Laurel Park and Recreation Center
The Lukmire Partnership
Howard County, MD |
The Lukmire Partnership was selected by Howard County to develop a master plan for a 50-acre park and to design all the facilities including a 60,000 sq ft recreation center, skate park, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, recreational fields and a future swimming pool. The site slopes 50 vertical feet from the outer edges and terminates in a wetlands and stream. Therefore, only about a quarter of the park could be developed.
As a result of the topography and in an agreement with adjacent residential owners, the new recreation center is a one-story building – the size of two football fields. The design approach was to divide the facility into zones, with active, acoustically loud functions separated from more passive activities by the front lobby. Included in the active zone are the 14,000 sq ft gymnasium, dance studio, weight room, child care center and locker rooms. Included in the passive side are all of the activity rooms, a multipurpose room, a senior center and health department.
A special feature of the recreation center is a rear courtyard which is accessible from the multipurpose room and activity rooms. It is a transitional space with both an arbor and landscaped area providing an outdoor space for receptions, parties and contemplation and is located away from the parking and noise generated around the Center.
The massing of the Center has also been broken down to decrease the scale of the long building. A series of elements reflecting the module of the activities behind them are projected, sometimes in masonry and sometimes in a metal panel. There are also two entrances, a main entrance used by most patrons and one designed specifically for seniors and those using the health department facilities.
Across from the Center is a large skate park which was designed collaboratively with teens from the neighborhood and a well-known skateboarder from California.
The project received a LEED® Silver rating.
