ARE Prep Sessions in Full Swing
Registration is now open for both Building Systems and Structural Systems, as well as all the remaining ARE prep classes.

We are pleased to again host Professor Michael Ermann for his Building Systems workshop March 8-10 and, for the ninth year in a row, Professor David Thaddeus, AIA for his renowned Structural Systems workshop April 4-6 (please note the new date). Spaces are filling quickly for both workshops, so please register soon to guarantee your place.

We have four supplemental classes remaining in February: Green Building, Accessibility and Architectural History I and II. Also in February our Saturday review sessions focus on Construction Documents I (Legal) and II (Documents), as well as Site Planning + Design. All offer HSW credits and can serve as excellent review classes for all members. Visit our ARE page for complete information and registration.

AIA Contract Documents Now Web-Based
ACD5, the new AIA Contract Documents® online service, launched on January 21. With this new service, Contract Documents are now completely web-based. This migration from PC-based software to the cloud offers access to documents anywhere, anytime with simplified sharing and editing. The previous desktop software relied on users sharing documents via email, with each collaborator drafting separate responses. ACD5 offers users a more integrated collaboration process where a user can invite reviewers to comment using editing tools embedded in the shared document. With ACD5, every customer – from purchasers of a single document to someone who owns an unlimited license – will be able to purchase documents one-at-a-time and edit nearly every word in an agreement using AIA Documents-on-Demand® Plus.

AIA Contract Documents is making the transition from the software version to the online service as easy as possible with a migration tool to pull existing documents from the desktop software into the ACD5 platform, training programs and support. The desktop software will eventually be phased out, but the shortest period an existing customer will have to make the transition will be a full year. Learn more on the AIA Contract Documents website.

Featured Project

North Gate Vineyard
O'Neil Architects
Purcellville, VA

North Gate Vineyard is the first winery in Loudoun County to achieve LEED® Gold certification and the second in all of Virginia to earn certification. The award was granted for the entire project consisting of the winery, production facility and tasting room which totals a combined 5656 square feet on 26 acres in Purcellville, Virginia.

North Gate used an all-local team to complete the project. The architect on the project was O'Neil Architects in Leesburg, Comfort Design of Winchester was the consulting MEP engineer and Brickstone Homes in Leesburg was the General Contractor. The LEED commissioning agent was Gretchen Coleman Commissioning Group in Roanoke.

North Gate Vineyard's state-of-the-art facilities were designed for the energy efficient production of wines. LEED certification was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:

  • A solar array on the south facing roof that produces 22kw of electricity comprised of 96 photo voltaic panels. The building is 100% solar powered and uses net metering to sell the excess electricity back to the grid for credits.
  • 2×8 advanced wall framing techniques and building dimensions based on common material sizes to minimize material waste.
  • A standing seam metal roof with a highly reflective surface to reduce heat gain.
  • Local, reclaimed, recycled, low VOC and sustainable building materials and décor.
  • High efficiency heat pumps for the HVAC systems and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs).
  • CO2 monitors in both the winery (for fermentation) and tasting room.
  • Plenty of natural daylight and operable windows and doors.
  • Extensive use of LED lighting in the tasting room.
  • Sustainable landscaping using native plants, designed by the Loudoun Master Gardeners.
  • A highly insulated building envelope with R39 walls and R51 in the ceiling and attic spaces, a fully insulated floor slab and a continuous exterior insulated wall sheathing system.
  • Motion sensor controls for lighting in the restrooms and office space.
  • Motion sensor faucets and high efficiency toilets.
  • Over 85% of the construction waste diverted from the local landfill and recycled.
