Annual Chapter Meeting, Elections and Honors Celebration on October 8
Please join us and welcome our special guest, Jack Davis, FAIA, Dean of the Virginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies and VSAIA President-elect for 2014. Jack will share information about the coming year, which marks the 100th anniversary of Virginia Society, and the upcoming Virginia Accord.

We will also be presenting the Chapter's Honor Awards and voting for our 2014 Chapter officers and directors. Election information is available in the September/October issue of AIA Northern Virginia News.

The dinner is at 6:30p at Maggiano's Little Italy in Tysons Galleria. Known for their great Italian food, no one will leave hungry after feasting on a selection of appetizers, salads, pasta, classic Italian entrées and tempting desserts. Tickets are $55 and we ask that you reserve your place by October 3.

Celebration of Our Newly Licensed Architects & Firm Tour of Cannon Design on October 15
The Young Architects Forum invites you to our inaugural celebration of our newly licensed members. Cannon Design is graciously hosting this celebration and is offering a tour of their firm and discussion about their recent projects, including their Tidewater Community College Student Center, featured in this issue of BLAST.

The celebration and tour begin at 6:00p, immediately following the AIA Northern Virginia Board meeting, also at Cannon Design. Continuing education credit is available for the tour and discussion. This event is offered free of charge, but reservations are requested.

Thank you to Cannon Design for their support of this celebration.

Three for Thirty: Reflections on the Evolution of Residential Design
Organized by the newly formed metro area CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network Knowledge Community), three well-respected local residential designers will reflect on how their practices, each spanning more than 30 years, have evolved over time. The evening will feature James W. Ritter, FAIA with Ritter Architects; David E. Neumann, AIA with Neumann Lewis Buchanan Architects; and Mark C. McInturff, FAIA with McInturff Architects.

This session takes place on October 23, 6:30p, at Virginia Tech's Washington Alexandria Architecture Center. (more info)

Thank you to Thorsen Construction for their generous support of this event.

Speed Mentoring Returns
Speed Mentoring is an exciting fast-paced event that is modeled after the Speed Dating concept. Mentees and Mentors participate in a series of five-minute one-on-one sessions. It's a great way to meet people outside of your own architecture circle, in a short amount of time. This event is October 28, 6:00p, at Dewberry in Fairfax. Registration is required by October 16.

ELA Applications Due to Chapter by October 3
A reminder... members interested in being considered for Chapter support in the ELA program must submit material by October 3. VSAIA's Emerging Leaders in Architecture (ELA), a year-long leadership training program, is accepting applications for the 2014 class. Our Chapter can nominate one candidate each year. The Chapter's nominee is guaranteed a place in the program and offered financial support to cover up to 50% of their ELA tuition. Details are available here.

15 for 12 – That's 15 Months of Membership for the Cost of 12
AIA will once again offer a special rate for new members who join between October 1 and December 31. The 15 for 12 promotion gives new members the rest of this year free of charge and membership through 2014. So encourage your colleagues to take advantage of this special offer. Contact the Chapter House for details at aianova@aianova.org.

Join the Next AIA Repositioning Virtual Town Hall on October 25
Join Mickey Jacob, FAIA; Robert Ivy, FAIA; and Tina Litteral, Hon. AIA on October 25 at 2:00p for the first in a series of quarterly virtual Town Halls for members to hear the latest news and ask questions about the progress of the Repositioning. Registration is available here.

Tidewater Community College, Norfolk Campus, New Student Center
Ballou Justice Upton Architects in association with Cannon Design
Norfolk, VA

The new Student Services Center at Tidewater Community College's downtown Norfolk campus innovatively develops a constricted urban site while preserving an existing pedestrian plaza and gardens. Brick and precast stone cladding and traditional fenestration on the building's east and west ends complement the surrounding urban fabric, while a swooping, transparent north façade engages the plaza and showcases the hub of student activity concentrated at the building's center. Several balconies further enhance the interplay between building and plaza.

The five-story building features ground-level dining and café; a student lounge with adjacent study areas; childcare; office suites for career center, tutoring and student organizations; a game room; fitness facilities with shower and locker rooms; and, on the top floor, a subdividable multipurpose event space with pantry and adjoining balcony. Featuring a variety of seating walls, steps and outdoor dining tables, the lively, attractive plaza supports multiple activities including small study groups, impromptu presentations, large gatherings and displays of student projects and artwork. Flow-through planters containing native species treat storm water runoff while showcasing the natural beauty of regional ecosystems. Please join us for a tour of Cannon Design on October 15. See the announcement above.
