Over the next 12 months, the AIA will explore the perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, needs and value of the architect, and they need your input to inform the discussion. Details were outlined in the April 13 issue of AIArchitect. |

Mead Center for American Theater - Home of Arena Stage
Bing Thom Architects
Washington, DC |
Since opening in October 2010, the Mead Center for American Theater presents a dramatic silhouette to the Washington, DC skyline. The Center has quickly become a cultural destination, and with its soaring cantilevered roof and sweeping expanse of curving glass, it has become one of the preeminent landmarks of the city as well.
Designed by Bing Thom, AIA, of Bing Thom Architects (BTA) in Vancouver, BC, the 200,000 square-foot Mead Center is the largest performing arts center to open in Washington, DC since the Kennedy Center. Incorporating two earlier, historic Arena Stage buildings designed by Harry Weese, BTA added the new Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle and wrapped the three buildings in a 45-foot-high insulated glass skin topped with a cantilevered roof to unify the spaces.
This new enclosure provides critical acoustic improvements by isolating outside noise while still maintaining the integrity of the historic buildings. The glass is held in place by a system of large, heavy timber columns (each one supporting more than 400,000 pounds of load on average) that also support the roof. Made of Parallam, an engineered wood product, the columns have an elliptical shape to reduce their visual impact, and are spaced 36 feet apart so that the building still feels transparent. This is the first heavy timber building structure to be constructed in modern Washington and also the first application of this form of hybrid wood and glass building enclosure in the United States.
Mark your calendar for June 10 and experience this building first hand as we celebrate our Design Awards Gala in the soaring space of the Mead Center and present our awards in the Kogod Cradle, a technically sophisticated oval theater where the floor sits away from the walls on 20 separate pads to ensure acoustic isolation. Additional information will be available shortly on our Design Awards page.
