The New AIA Northern Virginia Website is Available for Review
|
The Communications Committee is pleased to announce the launch of our new website. The preview version is currently available for review and we look forward to any comments you have. We will continue to add new features in the next few weeks, and content will continue to evolve. Please click here to share your comments. This will become the main Chapter site on December 1. We hope you enjoy the new and improved look! |
Changes to HSW Credit Reporting
|
Beginning in 2012, members may no longer self-report HSW credit hours. AIA Continuing Education System providers will need to report HSW courses for you to receive HSW credits. Members can continue to self report credit hours for self-designed activities, structured activities and professional community service, but the hours will not count for HSW credits. This change is to better align AIA credit with state licensing boards' practice. For complete information on Self-Reported Activities, click here. |
Volunteers Needed for the AIA National Convention
|
In case you haven't heard yet, the 2012 AIA National Convention will be held in Washington, DC from May 16-19 at the Washington Convention Center. Volunteers are needed to assist with tours, FUN activities, the official Information Desk and AIA evening Host parties. In exchange, volunteers will receive $50 off their Convention registration. If interested, please email lreynolds@manceandassociates.com. AIA Northern Virginia is organizing tours and a regional party during Convention and is looking for volunteers to help with planning and to serve as volunteers on each tour. Please let us know if you can help by emailing aianova@aianova.org. |

Burke Centre Library
Grimm + Parker Architects
Burke, Virginia |
The Burke Centre Library floor plan is in the shape of a leaf - nature's optimal vehicle for collecting rain water and sunlight and transforming them into energy through photosynthesis. The library collects rain water and harvests natural daylight as it celebrates sustainability through its form and functions.
Recognized with Silver Certification, this is the second public library in Fairfax County designed and constructed under LEED® design guidelines. The librarys open floor plan and generous use of windows provide for natural daylighting and views to the exterior. Energy efficient building systems, the utilization of recycled and reclaimed materials throughout the project, and the use of low VOC building materials and finishes result in a sustainable and healthy environment.
The library is sited in a grove of trees back from the road to reduce noise pollution while still maintaining a visible presence. Connecting the building to nature, mature trees were retained and the wood from a dying oak tree on the site was used in furniture throughout the building.
