Happy Hour with a Twist
We're hosting another Pecha Kucha Night on November 15. This popular networking event combines a happy hour with entertaining presentations. Meet fellow design professionals, exchange ideas and enjoy some food and drink. In case you haven't been to one before, Pecha Kucha Nights are informal gatherings with creative people who share their design projects, travels, hobbies or other interests using only 20 slides shown for 20 seconds each. It's fast-paced and fun!

We invite you to attend and we encourage you to volunteer to present a topic. How hard can it be to talk about something for only 6 minutes, 40 seconds? If you're interested, please contact us at aianova@aianova.org or (703) 549-9747. The event is free, although attendees will be purchasing their own refreshments. So give it a try and join us. Reservations are not required.

Pecha Kucha Night - November 15, 6:00p doors; 7:00p presentations, at the Light Horse Restaurant, 715 King Street, Alexandria 22314.

ArchEx Features Mentoring Session and the 2011 ELA Class Project
Architecture Exchange East (ArchEx), the annual conference of the Virginia Society AIA, will be held November 2-4 in Richmond. The conference features educational sessions, tours, an exhibit hall and a keynote address by Michelle Kaufmann. Of note are two programs designed for and by emerging professionals.

The first session, 2011 Emerging Leaders in Architecture Project Presentation, features the 2011 ELA class discussing their design project, What Do you See?, showcasing a Kiosk they developed to initiate and inspire a community conversation about the future of the Manchester neighborhood of Richmond. The second session, Designing Your Best Mentoring Experience Ever, pairs the Young Architects Forum and College of Fellows on a panel discussing the concept of mentoring and how the mentor-protégé relationship is unique in the architecture profession. Both sessions are offered on Thursday, November 3. For additional information click here.

Then, if you take a Virtual Convention course before January 31, 2012, you will be entered in a drawing to win one of five free iPad2s. You can read all the fine print here. Also, new for 2012 - All renewing members are eligible to participate in the Dues Installment Program. Enroll by April 30 and pay your membership dues in up to six installments. All of the details can be found here. Thank you for your membership!

532 North Washington Street
Cole & Denny Inc.
Alexandria, Virginia

Cole & Denny Inc. (C&D) recently completed the renovation of and addition to 532 North Washington Street in Old Town Alexandria. The original three-story row house, constructed in 1923, featured a painted brick facade, and is now joined by a new red brick infill structure of similar style and size. The new addition appears as a stand-alone structure, but is joined with the original.

A model of sustainable reuse of an existing structure, this conversion/addition now provides three levels of office space totaling 5,626sf. Interior modifications include new HVAC and electrical systems, wood flooring and energy-efficient lighting and windows. An indented light well wall on the south-facing side of the new addition creates space for sharing ambient sunlight with a neighboring structure. ADA-compliant access has been installed at the rear parking lot entrance, including an elevator providing direct access to the main level. The porch on the older structure, dating from the 1920s and removed 40 years later, was rebuilt to restore the original character of the façade and conform to other buildings along the 500 block.

This renovation has been selected as a recipient of the Alexandria Beautification Award. Criteria for this accolade include visibility from the public right-of-way, landscaping accents and elements, relationship and enhancements to neighborhood improvements and overall building textures and forms.
