Trapeze School New York in DC
Teass \ Warren Architects
Washington, DC

After five years in an uninsulated tent, Trapeze School New York (TSNY) approached the architects to help relocate to a pre-fabricated building that would temporarily occupy a prominent corner of a future development site.

Working within a tight budget and a limited kit of parts, the designers envisioned a building that would function both as improved enclosure for the school's playful program and as an urban identity statement. The scale, massing, and fenestration draw on the historic industrial buildings of the nearby Washington Navy Yard. Utilizing a standard color palette of blue and galvanized metal, wall panels were laid out in a pixelated pattern to graphically draw attention to the structure, while breaking down the building’s overall mass.

Translucent polycarbonate glazed openings at the north and south faces allow daylight to stream to the interior without compromising energy efficiency. Super-graphics applied to the glazing provide branding and back-lit signage at night. A silhouette of two flying figures in an aerobatic catch wraps the corner and hints to the thousands of passersby on their way to Nationals Park, the fun to be had inside.
