Membership Categories
The AIA is a three-tiered organization requiring membership for Architect and Associate members at the local (AIA Northern Virginia), state (Virginia Society AIA) and National levels. Local Chapter affiliation is assigned by the ZIP code of your business or home address. Unassigned Members, Allied Professional Members and Sponsors join AIA Northern Virginia at the local level only.To join, select the appropriate membership category below, complete the application form and send it to the Chapter House. Architect and Associate members may also join online.
Architect Member (AIA)
Individuals with an architectural license from a U.S. licensing authority are eligible for Architect membership.

Associate Member (Assoc. AIA)
Associate AIA membership is open to individuals who meet one of the following criteria:
- Professional degree in architecture
- Currently work under the supervision of an architect
- Currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working toward licensure
- Faculty member in a university program in architecture

International Associate Member (Int'l Assoc. AIA)
Individuals who have an architecture license or equivalent from a non-U.S. licensing authority are eligible for International Associate membership.

Unassigned Member
A member of another AIA Chapter may be an unassigned member of AIA Northern Virginia. Unassigned members enjoy all the benefits of Chapter membership, except voting, including access to all our publications and events, and participation in our Design Awards program.

Chapter sponsorship offers firms and companies the opportunity to support the Chapter at our highest and most visible level. Four levels of sponsorship are available.

Allied Professional Member
Individuals who do not hold a degree in architecture but share a special interest in the built environment as a professional colleague or enthusiast. Allied membership is at the local level only.
