The AIA Advocates an Architect Be Selected as the Next Architect of the Capitol Congress is in the process of selecting a new Architect of the Capitol and has appointed the Architect of the Capitol Commission to facilitate the process. The Architect of the Capitol is responsible for the maintenance and preservation of the U.S. Capitol, as well as the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. Currently, there is no requirement for the position that the holder be an architect; the AIA believes that only a licensed architect has the necessary education, training, skills and experience to handle the responsibilities of these national landmarks and their occupants. The AIA is engaging in an aggressive campaign to contact members of Congress and the Commission to stress the important of appointing a licensed architect and to explain why the expertise of an architect is necessary for the position. More information about the issue and the AIA position are available from the AIA National webpage here. AIA members are asked to contact their Congressional leaders and the Architect of the Capitol Commission members to urge them to choose a registered architect for the position. A list of Commission members is available here. You may consider singing the petition online. For additional information or questions on this issue, please contact Paul Mendelsohn, pmendelsohn@aia.org, (202) 626-7388 or Phil Simon, psimon@aia.org, (202) 626-7463 at AIA Headquarters. |

Tour of Historic Morven Park Estate Offered on Friday The Morven Park estate, 1,200 acres just west of Leesburg, Virginia off Route 7 on Old Waterford Road, was home to two Governors: Thomas Swann, a Governor of Maryland in the 19th century, and Virginia's reform Governor Westmoreland Davis. The mansion, a focal point of the estate, evolved from a fieldstone farmhouse in 1781 to its present turn-of-the-century appearance. It is actually three structures moved together. Visitors enter the mansion through a Greek Revival portico to see a Renaissance great hall, a Jacobean dining room, a French drawing room, a library and a display which highlights the life and times of Governor Davis. The tour, organized by the chapter’s Historic Resource Committee, will focus on the ongoing restoration work, especially the installation of a remote underground HVAC system designed by Landmark Engineering. 2 AIA/CES HSW LUs are available for the tour. Hard hats and sturdy shoes are a must! Registration is required; email reservations@aianova.org. For questions, contact the Chapter House at (703) 549-9747. For more information and directions, visit http://www.morvenpark.org/mansion.htm. |
