Michael Foster, FAIA and David Jameson, FAIA Elevated to College of Fellows This year, two AIA Northern Virginia architects have been elected to the prestigious College of Fellows in recognition of contributions to architecture on the national level. It was the first attempt for each. David Jameson, FAIA is the founder and principal of David Jameson Architect, an award winning practice in Old Town Alexandria. His projects have earned more than 30 AIA awards and countless publications, leading to his nomination "for promoting the aesthetic, scientific and practical efficiency of the profession through design." David is also an active contributer to the Chapter, serving on the Board of Directors and as Chair of the Small Firms Committee. "Dedicated to shaping culture, commerce and our lives through creative solutions for the built environment," MTFA Architecture, Inc.'s founder and principal Michael T. Foster, FAIA was elected for his commitment to "advancing the living standards of people through their improved environment." Michael also serves as the chair of the Arlington County Planning Commission and is on Virginia Society's Board of Directors. More information about each of these accomplished architects is available in the March/April edition of AIA NOVA News. Fellowship is the second highest honor bestowed by the AIA, and the College of Fellows represents only about 3% of national membership. The rigorous application process must be completed by October each year. If you are interested in being considered, know someone worthy of nomination, or would just like to learn more, information is available here. Help Finding Summer Interns If you are still looking for student interns for the coming summer, please contact the Chapter House at (703) 549-9747 or email jobs@aianova.org. We maintain a strong relationship with the Virginia Tech Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center and their program in Blacksburg. We periodically receive resumes from students in other schools as well. |

Campsite House |
![]() |
This is a new house, on a heavily wooded site. The house is placed near the edge of a bluff, and overlooks a creek far below. The house is composed of two linear, shed-roofed structures, set at ninety degrees to one another. The two structures are pulled apart, in order to accommodate a path that goes down the hill to a rocky promontory point. Entry to the house is at this glassed-in crossing of stone paths. The living shed and the bedroom shed create an outdoor area with a fire pit as a “campsite” courtyard. At the edge of the courtyard is a tower inspired by hunters’ deer stands; it is an outdoor dining room at grade level, with a library above. Access to the library is gained from an office mezzanine in the house, and by a bridge. A roof deck on top of the deer stand becomes a place for nature-watching and stargazing. |
