Introducing BLAST from AIA Northern Virginia AIA Northern Virginia is pleased to introduce BLAST, a new e-newsletter with the goal of bringing Chapter news and events to the membership in a timely and consolidated format. AIA Northern Virginia Membership Reaches 1,000 For the first time in its 32-year history, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the AIA has a membership exceeding 1,000 architects and interns. Tom Affeldt, Associate AIA of Devereaux and Associates became the 1,000th member on January 23, having recently relocated graduated from the University of Michigan. The Chapter was founded in 1975 with 145 Charter members. By the beginning of 2000, membership had increased to 784. Over the last year, the Chapter has enjoyed growth of approximately 15%, compared to a national average of 13%. This translates to a rate of more than one new member weekly. Some of this growth may be attributed to upcoming changes in the continuing education requirements for architects licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership in the AIA offers not only CES seminars, but transcript reporting as well. For more information, please visit the CES page of the Chapter website. The 2010 Imperative: Examining the Role of the Built Environment in Global Warming Did you know that buildings are the single largest contributor to global warming? That in the US, buildings are responsible for almost half (48%) of all greenhouse gas emissions annually? To address this, Architecture 2030, in partnership with AmericaSpeaks, is hosting a Global Emergency Teach-in. The Teach-in, titled The 2010 Imperative, will be web-cast live from New York on February 20, from noon-3:30 pm. This is intended for architects and those involved with planning and designing our communities to discover how they inadvertently fuel global warming through design and what they can do to change this. Architecture 2030 is calling for all new buildings to reduce their energy consumption by 50%, working towards carbon neutral by 2030. The Teach-in, sponsored by the AIA, USGBC, the NY Academy of Sciences, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the AIA Large Firm Roundtable, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, is free. It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Edgar C. Beery, Jr., FAIA on Sunday, February 11. Edgar was one of the founding partners of BeeryRio Architecture + Interiors in Springfield and a Charter Member of the Northern Virginia Chapter, serving as the first chapter president in 1975. He was an exceptional AIA leader, honored by the chapter with the first ever Distinguished Leadership Award in 1975, the Service to the Chapter Award in 1980, and the Award of Honor in 1984. In 1988, Edgar was awarded the Noland Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the Virginia Society AIA, in recognition for his distinguished career. An obituary is expected to appear in the Washington Post Wednesday or Thursday. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, February 16, at St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church in Pawley's Island, SC. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm, Thursday, February 15, at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Litchfield-Pawleys Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Paul's Waccamaw United Methodist Church, 180 St. Pauls Place, Pawleys Island, SC 29585. |

Catholic University Residence Hall Complex Master Plan + Phase 1 |
Little recently completed the master planning study and program for a three-phase, 1000 bed residence complex for Catholic University of America. The complex, at the northeast campus edge, will act as the anchor for the residential precinct on campus, and serve as a link to the DuFour Athletic Center along McCormack Road. The focus of the project is on creating community in this residential zone, retaining upperclassmen on campus, and appealing to them by creating a facility that has more in common with a commercial condominium than with an institutional dormitory. The first phase of the project, a 127,000 sf, seven-story building, housing 400 beds in suite configuration, is now in the contract document stage. Little is the Design Architect, and their design/build partner is Opus East for this phase of work. The architectural vocabulary and detailing of the building is contextual to the neighboring residence halls, and evocative of the campus’ Gothic roots. The buildings have been laid out to occupy the street edge, while creating an expansive terraced lawn on the resulting interior quadrangle. The public spaces on the building’s interior are focused onto the terrascaped lawn, and other outdoor terraces to encourage student activity and interaction. This first phase building will be occupied in Fall 2008. |

Gehry Partners teams with ABC Imaging |
